kashmir: Number of youths joining militancy comes down to 99 this year: DGP Vijay Kumar


More foreign (Pakistan) militants were killed this year as compared to last year in Kashmir while a fewer number of youths joined militant groups in 2022. Jammu and Kashmir additional DGP Vijay Kumar on Saturday said as many as 42 Pakistani militants were killed till November 25, 2022 as compared to 21 foreign terrorist last year.

Similarly, 127 local militants were killed this year as compared to 150 last year. The total number of active foreign and local militants have come down to 81 this year, Kumar added.

While citing the data on violence this year, Kumar said the number of youths joining militancy has come down to 99 this year as compared to 136 last year.

“Three districts of Bandipora, Kupwara and Gandherbal reported zero local militant recruitment this year. Among those who joined this year, 64 killed, 17 of them were arrested while 18 are still active, ” said Kumar. The highest number of militants were killed in Pulwama and Anantnag whereas maximum number of foreign militants were killed in the border district of Kulgam.
Kumar added that most militants joined Lashkar backed The Resistance Force (TRF), followed by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Hizbul Mujahideen. “As many as 73 youths joined TRF while 13 of them joined JeM and six joined HM. Four of them joined Al-Badr and 3 were part of JK (ISIS). South Kashmir with 78 militants witnessed the highest number of recruitments, central Kashmir reported 14 while North recorded 7 such cases. Hybrid militants between 15-18 in numbers are active in south Kashmir,” said Kumar.

The targeted killing of civilians and security forces in 2022 came down as compared to last year. According to ADGP Kumar, the number of civilians killed was 26 this year as compared to 35 this year. This also includes 3 Kashmiri pandits, 15 local Muslims, 3 Hindus and eight outsiders.

Kumar said as compared to 80 active top commanders in 2016-17, there are only 2 left in Valley. The union government in 2019 withdrew Article 370 from the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir and divided the state into two union territories.

On the number of stone pelting cases, Kumar explained that only 26 cases of minor nature were reported as compared to 60 and only 1 civilian was injured. “These incidents were m related to stone pelting at encounter sites and were mostly disputes among locals or communities,” clarified Kumar. The number of such incidents were as high as 2897 in 2016 and has come down to less than 1 percent when compared to 2016, another official claim.
