army: Suspected militants attack Army vehicle on Digboi- Pengeri road in Tinsukia district

Suspected militants belonging to the proscribed outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) on Monday attacked an Army vehicle on the Digboi- Pengeri road in Tinsukia district.

There was a gun battle. A senior police official who does not want to be named told ET, “The ambush took place around 9.20pm. Around 50 km away from Tinsukia amidst deep jungles, an army convoy was passing through the road when it was attacked.”

The militants lobbed grenades and the tire of the army vehicle flatted. “Owing the impact of the blast, deep cater was visible on the roads. As soon as the vehicle stopped militants fired and the Army retaliated.

Senior Army and police officials including DIG (North-East range) Jitmol Doley and Tinsukia SP Abhijeet Gurav immediately rushed to the spot with heavy reinforcements. The entire area including the road was cordoned off and a search operation was launched to nab the rebels”.

Gaurav said, “The Ulfa (I) rebels fired at a bullet-proof vehicle of the Army taking cover of the thick jungles along the Digboi-Pengeri road. The Army also counter-attacked, forcing them to flee. There was no casualty or injuries to the soldiers. Our search operation is underway.”

Officials said that blood stains found in the jungle may belong to fleeing militants. Some militants are injured.

On November 19, 2016, the Ulfa (I) had carried out a similar attack in the same area on the Digboi-Pengeri road in which three soldiers were killed while four other injured.
